A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to improve visual signs of aging of the face and neck. A facelift improves sagging facial skin, jowls, and loose neck skin by removing excess fat, tightening muscles and re-draping the skin. Facelifts in males are more difficult because the scars around the ears are usually not covered by long hair, and the beard can be pulled up. Because of this, many men elect to have a direct excision neck lift.
Facelift surgery is individualized for each of Dr. Olding’s patients. For some patients it is appropriate to be performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as fat injections, a brow lift, or eyelid surgery. The best candidates for facelift surgery have a sagging face and neck line, but whose skin has elasticity and whose bone structure is well defined. Dr. Olding will work with you to decide whether a facelift is the right surgical procedure for you.
The facelift procedure is generally performed under “twilight” anesthesia on an outpatient basis, but some patients may require brief hospital stays. Patients usually return to work and to strenuous activity within 2-3 weeks. Results last 7-10 years.
I don’t look old and tired so I don’t feel old and tired
A week after my facelift I was working in the yard when two women walked by. They asked “What happened to the lady who lived here?” I told them it was me – I’ve lived here for 35 years. One woman said, “Oh, it must have been your mother.” I have felt more energetic too. I don’t look old and tired so I don’t feel old and tired. Thank you Dr. Olding for changing my life at the age of 69!
Patients may experience temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, and skin dryness or tenderness. Men may need to pursue laser hair removal where the beard is repositioned behind the ears. Potential complications include nerve injury (which is usually temporary), infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry or change in hairline, skin loss, or hair loss.
Patients interested in cosmetic facial surgery relating to aging, please bring with you any photos of yourself 5, 10, 15 or 20 years past, so Dr. Olding may see the changes in your face. Please also look at the list of all medications and supplements you may not take 2 weeks prior to your surgery.
