Lower Body Liposuction
CONVENIENTLY LOCATED TO SERVE WASHINGTON, DC
Lower body liposuction, or suction-assisted lipectomy, enhances body contours by liquefying and vacuuming away fat deposits. Common target areas include the buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles.
This procedure has gained popularity in Washington, DC, particularly for those struggling to eliminate stubborn fat from their thighs, hips, or buttocks.
At The DC Cosmetic Surgery Center, we perform lower body liposuction to refine your overall body contour and address specific trouble spots. The goal is to help you feel more confident with natural-looking, youthful results.
What Is Lower Body Liposuction?
Lower body liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from specific lower body areas, including the thighs, hips, knees, and buttocks. It is performed using a technique called tumescent liposuction, in which a saline solution mixed with a local anesthetic is injected into the targeted area to help break down fat and make it easier to remove.
This procedure is minimally invasive and performed as an outpatient surgery. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, many patients can return home the same day.
Areas Treated with Lower Body Liposuction
Several areas of the lower body can benefit from liposuction. These areas include:
- Thighs: Both the inner and outer thighs can be treated to create a more proportional appearance.
- Hips and Flanks: Commonly referred to as “love handles,” fat in this area can be challenging to lose through diet and exercise alone.
- Buttocks: Lower body liposuction can help reduce excess fat in this area, giving a more lifted appearance.
- Knees: Some individuals experience fat accumulation around the knees, which can be improved through liposuction.
Addressing multiple areas in a session helps patients achieve a more harmonious and balanced body contour.
Benefits of Lower Body Liposuction
There are many benefits to undergoing lower body liposuction, including:
- Improved body contour: Removing stubborn fat from targeted areas can enhance your silhouette and provide a slimmer, more defined lower body.
- Minimally invasive: Compared to other surgical procedures, liposuction is considered less invasive because it requires small incisions and has a shorter recovery time.
- Long-lasting results: Once fat cells are removed, they don’t come back, making this a permanent solution for fat reduction if you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Ideal Candidates for a Lower Body Liposuction
Lower body liposuction is appropriate for patients who cannot effectively remove excess lower body fat through proper diet and regular exercise alone. Ideal candidates are healthy and have realistic goals. Good candidates are willing to make healthy lifestyle changes to maintain their results.
Lower Body Liposuction Consultation
Dr. Olding will start your consultation by listening to your aesthetic goals. He will perform an examination of the areas of your lower body that you are concerned about. He will determine if you are safe for lower body liposuction by looking over your medical records.
Dr. Olding will create a procedure plan based on your goals. He will discuss the lipo procedure, including the healing process and an estimate of the cost, and he will show you before-and-after photos. A date and time will be chosen for your procedure.
Lower Body Liposuction Procedure
The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis, but a more extensive approach may require a brief hospital stay. The duration of the procedure will depend on the number of treatment areas. For tumescent anesthesia, a solution containing lidocaine, epinephrine, and normal saline will be administered to minimize bleeding and tissue trauma.
The cannula (a thin hollow tube) will be inserted to loosen the excess body fat. The surgical vacuum attached to the cannula will suction out the fatty tissue. Once the target volume of excess fat has been removed, the area will be cleaned to complete the procedure.
Lower Body Liposuction Recovery
Patients usually return to work within two weeks and to strenuous activity within a month. A compression garment is worn for six weeks. The results are permanent with sensible diet and exercise.
After undergoing lower body liposuction, patients may experience temporary bruising, swelling, drainage, numbness, soreness, or a burning sensation; however, swelling and bruising subside within one to six months, but those side effects are minimized with tumescent techniques.
Potential complications of lower body liposuction include asymmetry, fluid retention, skin rippling or discoloration, bleeding, infection, or excessive fluid loss leading to shock (only in cases that result in significant tissue removal).
My experience with Dr. Olding and his staff was absolutely wonderful
My experience with Dr. Olding and his staff was absolutely wonderful. After several consultations with other plastic surgeons I settled on Dr. Olding because I believed he was the most qualified and showed the best judgment while explaining my procedure to me. He was also recommended to me by my trusted dermatologist so that factored into my decision as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do the results of lower body liposuction last?
The results of lower body liposuction can last for many years, especially if you maintain a stable weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Since the fat cells are permanently removed, they won’t return to the treated areas. However, gaining weight can cause the remaining fat cells in your body to expand, potentially affecting your results.
Can lower body liposuction help with cellulite?
Lower body liposuction is primarily designed to remove fat deposits and is not aimed at treating cellulite. While it may improve the body’s overall contour, cellulite involves skin and connective tissue issues that liposuction may not address. Other treatments, such as radiofrequency or laser therapies, may help improve the appearance of cellulite.
Can lower body liposuction be combined with other procedures?
Many patients combine lower body liposuction with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck or skin tightening treatments, to achieve better body contouring surgery results. Combining procedures can also shorten your recovery time and provide more dramatic results.
How much fat can be removed during lower body liposuction?
The amount of fat that can be safely removed during lower body liposuction varies from person to person. Most surgeons recommend removing up to five liters of fat in one session to minimize risks and allow a safe recovery. Dr. Olding will evaluate your needs during your consultation and advise you on the appropriate amount.
Is lower body liposuction painful?
Lower body liposuction is performed under anesthesia so that you won’t feel pain during the procedure. However, you may experience some discomfort, swelling, or bruising in the days following surgery. These symptoms are usually manageable with prescribed pain medications, and most patients return to normal activities within a week.
