Breast Augmentation Washington, DC
A breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, enlarges the size of the breasts using implants filled with either saline or silicone gel. It can be done to enhance your body contour if you feel that your breasts are too small, to balance breast size when there is a significant difference between the sizes of your breasts, and for a number of other medical and personal reasons.
It is your decision whether to use saline or silicone implants; however, many of our patients choose silicone gel implants due to their similar feel to natural breasts. The implants are inserted either behind the breast tissue, or partially or completely under the chest muscles; Dr. Olding will work with you to determine which option is best for you.
The implants are placed during an outpatient procedure. Patients generally return to work within a week or two. It may take months for scars to fade, but they are usually hidden in the fold beneath the breast. The larger the implant, the more unnatural the result.

Patients may experience temporary pain, swelling, bruising, or a change in nipple sensation. Potential complications include implant rupture, development of scar tissue, bleeding, infection, or a change in the sensitivity of the nipples.
Capsular contracture or hardening of the breast can occur with a small percentage of the patients and is treated by massage and, if necessary, surgery. Implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a lymphoma associated with a very small percent of textured implants (i.e., rough surface implants). Dr. Olding does not use these textured implants.
