Breast Augmentation

CONVENIENTLY LOCATED TO SERVE WASHINGTON, DC

Breast AugmentationA breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, enlarges the size of the breasts using implants filled with either saline or silicone gel. It can be done to enhance your body contour if you feel that your breasts are too small, to balance the proportions of your body when there is a significant difference between the sizes of your breasts, and for a number of other medical and personal reasons.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Patients can enjoy the benefits of breast augmentation, such as:

  • Aesthetic Improvement – Breast augmentation enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the breasts under the skilled hands of Dr. Michael Olding. The procedure carefully forms or molds the breasts to a more symmetrical look.
  • Restored Breast Symmetry – A notable physical benefit of breast augmentation is its capacity to address and correct asymmetry, ensuring seamless alignment between both breasts. This correction contributes to aesthetic refinement and fosters a sense of physical equilibrium, creating a harmonious appearance.
  • Posture and Spinal Alignment – Breast augmentation’s positive impact on posture and spinal alignment adds a layer of physical well-being. The additional volume and support may contribute to better spinal posture, potentially alleviating discomfort.
  • Improved Clothing Fit – Beyond aesthetic enhancements, breast augmentation offers practical advantages in improving your clothes fit. The procedure enhances breast volume and shape so that you feel more comfortable in your clothes.

Ideal Candidates for Breast Augmentation:

The ideal candidates for breast augmentation generally have:

  • Good physical and mental health
  • At least 18 years old for saline implants and at least 22 years old for silicone implants
  • Stable body weight
  • Fully developed breasts
  • Realistic expectations

The candidacy for breast surgery also rises when the patients have:

  • Smaller breasts than their desired size, volume, and fullness
  • Disproportionate or asymmetrical breasts
  • Experienced volume loss in their breasts due to childbirth or drastic weight loss

Saline or Silicone Breast Implants?

It is your decision whether to use saline or silicone implants; however, many of our patients choose silicone gel implants due to their similar feel to natural breasts. The implants are inserted either behind the breast tissue or partially or completely under the chest muscles; Dr. Olding will work with you to determine which option is best for you.

What to Expect From Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can return home soon after the procedure is over. Dr. Olding will make strategically placed incisions to limit the visibility of post-surgical marks, and insert the implants into the designated area. Once the necessary corrections are made, he will close the incisions and bandage the surgical area.

Since this is an invasive procedure, you will need to take time off work and certain activities to rest and recover. Patients generally return to work within a week or two. It may take months for scars to fade, but they are usually hidden in the fold beneath the breast.

Patients may experience temporary pain, swelling, bruising, or a change in nipple sensation after the surgery. Potential complications include implant rupture, development of scar tissue, bleeding, infection, or a change in the sensitivity of the nipples.

Capsular contracture or hardening of the breast can occur with a small percentage of the patients and is treated by massage and, if necessary, surgery. Implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a lymphoma associated with a very small percent of textured implants (i.e., rough surface implants). Dr. Olding does not use these textured implants.

Recovery and Aftercare:

Understanding the breast augmentation recovery process is integral to a successful outcome. Our dedicated medical team guides the patient through post-operative care to ensure a smooth recovery timeline. Patients receive comprehensive aftercare instructions for a comfortable and efficient healing process.

Combining Breast Augmentation with Other Procedures:

Dr. Michael Olding recognizes the growing trend of combining cosmetic procedures for comprehensive results. Some patients choose to have a breast augmentation with lift procedure. A mommy makeover is the ideal procedure for women after pregnancy. This approach allows additional cosmetic surgeries to address various concerns simultaneously, enhancing overall results.

Online Resources

There are a number of online resources to help educate you about a breast augmentation procedure and to help you visualize what you might look like after having undergone a breast augmentation. We typically use MENTOR® Breast Implants in our breast augmentations; the manufacturer provides many before and after photos of real breast augmentation patients.

You can also use the MENTOR® Visualizer to virtually “try on” different sizes, shapes, and placements of MENTOR® Breast Implants. This will also help Dr. Olding to understand your expectations and desired results. Visit their website to use the MENTOR® Visualizer before your consultation.

MENTOR® Breast Implant Warranty

Your MENTOR® Breast Implants are guaranteed for your lifetime. Any patient who undergoes a breast augmentation with MENTOR® Breast Implants is automatically enrolled in a MENTOR® Promise™ Protection Plan – if your implants rupture or deflate, you will receive up to two replacement breast implants of the same style at no charge to you. You can learn more about the MENTOR® Promise™ Protection Plan on their website.
