Facial Filler Injection

Subdermal fillers plump skin on the face that has lost volume to the aging process. Filler materials can be made of natural acids or synthetic materials, and are generally offered on an outpatient basis in the doctor’s office under topical anesthesia. Results are evident immediately. Patients may experience slight discomfort, swelling, bruising, numbness, and/or redness from the needle injection, which may last for a few days, or in very rare instances, blindness.
Patients seeking filler injections with Dr. Olding are advised to abstain from aspirin-like medications for at least 10-14 days prior to their injection. This helps to reduce bleeding and bruising. A list of these medications and supplements can be found on our website.
Dr. Olding uses several different facial fillers in his practice:
- Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®
They are clear liquid gels composed of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid used to reduce or eliminate deep wrinkles and add lost facial volume. The results can last for up to nine months. Occasionally, a patient will develop a granuloma, or lump, as a complication of these injections, which could be painful or infected. This classification of fillers is the only one that can be “dissolved” with an injection if necessary, and therefore is safer and the most widely used synthetic filler on the market. - RADIESSE®
RADIESSE® is a non-toxic, non-allergenic synthetic injectable filler. The results can last for up to two years with touch-ups. Complications with RADIESSE® are rare. - Sculptra®
Sculptra® has been used across Europe since the 1990s to improve hollowed cheeks, sunken eyes and wrinkles. It generally requires three to six treatments to achieve the desired results, which last up to two years. Allergic reactions are possible but rare. Some patients may develop granulomas or bumps beneath the skin, which may require surgical removal. - Fat (see Fat Injection section)
Please note: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, if you wish to use topical numbing cream before your filler injections, please make certain to apply it at home and remove it before you enter our building, as you will be required to wear a mask. Topical numbing creams are available on Amazon (without a prescription) or can be filled at your local pharmacy with a prescription.
Facial filler patients, please download and review our list of aspirin-like medications and refrain from taking any of these medications and supplements for at least 2 weeks prior to your consultation with Dr. Olding, should you desire to have your injections that same day. Also, please do not wear makeup if you are planning fillers. Bring your regular facial cleanser with you to remove makeup you may be wearing to the appointment.
