CONVENIENTLY LOCATED TO SERVE WASHINGTON, DC

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, an eye lift or blepharoplasty corrects excess upper eyelid skin and puffy bags below the eyes by removing excess skin and/or fat and muscle. It can diminish the look of loose skin and bagginess in the eyelid region.

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis, and many upper eyelid–only procedures can be done in the doctor’s office under total local anesthesia, so it is important to have someone available to help you home after the surgery is completed. The surgery will take about two hours. During the procedure, local anesthesia is administered. Patients are generally reading again in two to three days and back to work and strenuous activity within two weeks. Results are very long-lasting.

Results are simply terrific

I went to Dr. Olding for upper eyelid reduction (blepharoplasty) after comparing ratings among multiple ratings venues (Angies, Washingtonian, Checkbook, etc.). The surgery was done at GW Hospital and was superb in every way – I felt very well-cared for. Recovery was easy. Results are simply terrific. Dr. Olding was especially helpful relieving my anxiety: he is straightforward, clear, takes the time necessary to explain, and has earned my complete trust.

Potential Risks of Eyelid Surgery

Once the procedure is completed, the doctor will let you know about the activities you have to avoid and the signs you need to look out for in regard to potential risks. Potential complications include bleeding, infection, swelling at the corners of the eyes, development of dry eyes, a slight asymmetry in healing, difficulty closing the eyes completely (which is rarely permanent), a drawing down of the lower lids that necessitates follow-up surgery, and blindness (which is extremely rare and has never occurred in Dr. Olding’s practice). Use cold compresses and keep your head elevated to reduce bruising and swelling. You might also have watery eyes, double vision, and light sensitivity, but these symptoms are temporary and will subside quickly.

Recovery from Eyelid Surgery?

Since it is an outpatient procedure, you can go home immediately after the surgery. As soon as the anesthesia wears off, the recovery will begin. The recovery period will vary depending on your condition. Patients will have to take about a week or two off work as they heal. While some initial results will be visible after the procedure, in most cases, full results take about one month to arise.

Candidates for Eyelid Surgery

Most people undergo eyelid surgery to reduce the appearance of bags present under their eyes. It can also be used for eliminating tired-looking and droopy eyelids and restoring one’s vibrant and alert appearance. In addition to the cosmetic benefits provided by eyelid surgery, it also provides functional benefits to those suffering from impaired peripheral vision because of severely sagging eyelid skin.
