(abdominoplasty)

Procedure:

  • Several Types of Procedures
  • Type 1: Panniculectomy - removal of only the hanging skin & fat.
  • Type 2: Miniabdominoplasty - removal of fat and skin, tightening of the muscle, but the umbilicus (belly-button) portion is unchanged.
  • Type 3: Abdominoplasty - removal of all the skin and fat between the umbilicus and pubis, repositioning of the umbilicus and tightening of the muscle (the most common type).
  • Type 4: Fleur-de-lys abdominoplasty - same as abdominoplasty except there is also removal of skin and fat in vertical axis.

In/Outpatient:

Outpatient or overnight stay.

Side Effects:

Swelling, soreness, bruising, & numbness.

Risks:

  • Pulmonary embolisms (blood clot to lungs)
  • Asymmetry
  • Infection
  • Hematoma (bleeding collection)
  • Seroma (fluid collection)
  • Excessive Scarring
  • Umbilical and skin necrosis

Recovery:

  • Back to work: 3 - 4 weeks.
  • More strenuous activity: 4 - 6 weeks.
  • Fading and flattening of scars: 3 months - 2 years.

Results:

Depends on age and weight gain, but especially helpful after pregnancies
